BooksThe Midlothian Rotary Club’s first-ever Summer Literacy Program at Crenshaw Elementary School in conjunction with the Washington Redskins’ Read effort launched on Tuesday, July 1, 2014.

Every week, Rotarians from Midlothian Rotary Club, Brandermill Rotary and other local organizations will mentor one-on-one with students enrolled in the program designed to help students increase their reading levels.  The program combines reading, comprehension and journal writing activities designed to increase skills and avoid the dreaded “summer reading slump.”

The program shares the same goals as another effort led by the Washington Redskins, the Redskins Read initiative. This initiative promotes youth literacy by challenging local elementary school students to explore the joy of reading and the power of imagination through books. Students who read 10 or more books for the 2013-2014 school year are invited to have a parent, guardian or teacher nominate them for the Redskins Read Book Challenge. Eligible students will receive reading certificates and be entered into a drawing to win additional Redskins prizes.
