About Rotary International

Rotary, the world’s first service organization, was founded in Chicago on February 23rd, 1905 by Paul P. Harris. The name of Rotary originates from the early practice of rotating members from one club to another. The group expanded nationally and internationally over the years and included clubs on six continents by 1921; in 1922, the organization adopted the current name, Rotary International. By 1925, a mere 20 years after the foundation of Rotary, there were over 200 clubs worldwide, with over 20,000 members.

Rotary is and has been known to attract such distinguished members of society as prime ministers, presidents and a variety of other luminaries. In 1989, Rotary International voted to allow the admittance of women into all Rotary clubs. Of Rotary’s current 1.2 million members, more than 145,000 are female.

Today, Rotary International has over 32,000 clubs in 200 countries.
